Location.
Opened in 1881, the Best Western Hotel Spaander is a traditional redbrick inn next to the harbour in central Volendam 21 kilometres from the centre of Amsterdam. The hotel was once a popular meeting point for artists from across Europe, many of whom paid their bill with the paintings that adorn the walls today. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) is 40 kilometres away.

Hotel Features.
The hotel offers an indoor pool with gym, sauna and steam room. Alongside the two restaurants there's a pub, and a terrace bar and café where guests can relax and watch the world cycle by. Practical amenities include free parking and a 24-hour front desk with safe-deposit box.

Two restaurants grace the Hotel Spaander. The Grote-en tussenserre offers sweeping views of Lake IJsselmeer, waitresses in traditional Volendam dress and an à la carte menu of Dutch French dishes with an emphasis on locally caught fish. The Herberg, smaller than the Grote, is an old inn literally covered in paintings creating a snug bistro feel. Again the menu offers Dutch French dishes and local fish and seafood.

Guestrooms.
The 79 guestrooms have Volendam-style decor with light wooden furniture and include cable television with pay movies, direct-dial phones and wireless Internet. Private bathrooms are equipped with hair dryers.

Expert Tip.
The former island of Marken, now connected to the mainland by dike, is home to a picturesque fishing village and well worth the short bus or boat trip.

Getting there. From the airport, take the train, departing every 15 minutes, to Amsterdam Central Station. From there, take 110 to Volendam Zeestraat.
