Location.
The contemporary Sandton Hotel De Cooghen is set 500 metres from fine sandy beaches in the seaside village of De Koog on the picturesque and wildlife-rich island of Texel. It is 100 kilometres north of Amsterdam. Amsterdam Schipol Airport (AMS) is 100 kilometres away, an approximate driving time of 120 minutes.

Hotel Features.
Guests wishing to explore the pretty island of Texel are catered for with a bicycle hire service for 8.50 EUR per day. The hotel also offers a sauna and steam room, a patio area, a bar and complimentary newspapers in the lobby. Restaurant Cooghen is a contemporary- styled restaurant serving a range of local and international dishes. It also offers a bar and a sun-trap patio area, with takeaway lunch boxes available.

Several recreational activities can be found on and around the beach, 500 metres from the hotel. The island of Texel, one of Europe's pre-eminent bird breeding grounds, is particularly good for cycling, with many kilometres of excellent, flat cycle tracks. The De Koog go-kart track is also 500 metres from the hotel.

Expert Tip.
Located at Oudeschild on the south-east coast of Texel, the Beachcomber's Museum is 11 kilometres from the hotel. It houses a collection of maritime finds or, if you prefer, artefacts of nautical archaeology. Unusually, visitors are able to enter a shipwreck in something approximating its natural state, minus the great depth. EcoMare nature centre, two kilometres away, is a refuge for birds and seals and organizes excursions to the Wad, to the east, major seal gathering points.

Driving Directions

Getting there.
There is a railway station in the terminal's central hall, under Schipol Plaza. Trains go to Den Helder (80 minutes journey time) and from here ferries go to Texel every hour on the half hour. The boat ride takes approximately 20 minutes, and runs from 6.30 AM to 9 PM every hour on the hour. On Sundays and holidays the first ferry leaves one hour later during the summer and two hours later in winter. From the ferry dock, take a bus or taxi to De Koog, a journey of about 15 minutes. De Koog is compact and easily explored on foot or by bicycle. The island of Texel is particularly cycle-friendly, being totally flat and threaded with cycle tracks.

Driving directions.From Amsterdam take the highway to 'Den Helder' following 'Zaandam' or 'Leeuwarden'. In Den Helder follow signs to the ferry ('Texel'). then follow the signs to De Koog. In De Koog turn right, pass a Texaco petrol station, and turn left on to 'Nikadel'. Continue and cross Dorpsstraat shopping street on the left, and cross over on to the 'Badweg'. On the left is a red and white barrier shows the hotel parking lot.
